I was an ad agency exec in a "past life"... not quite Mad Men... but close. I've also been a Communication Coach, Mentor and Specialist for about 20 years. In that time I've tried bootstrapping just about every online thing you can imagine to build my business. In fact, over time I've spent a small fortune on it. I also love to learn and was fascinated with the research and the process.

Over time I found that the easiest, quickest and best results always came from some sort of search engine optimization (SEO). Which really just means playing nice with Google. Once I realized that, I started fooling around with it for my small business entrepreneurs. Turns out it made such a difference that that's what I do now... with coaching on the side. 

Bottom line is that i now know that no one who owns a business needs to be fooling around with building stuff on the web.

Do you need a presence yes. Do you have to build it yourself? No. Should you? Probably not. A least not unless you want to. You know the saying, 'stick to your knitting'? Well that's this. Honestly, all odds are it's not worth trying to build it yourself. The savings won't be much (if anything) especially when you calculate time. And, that doesn't even begin to count the cost of how trying to create your presence, do the work AND drum up business leads to burnout.

I'm betting you didn't decide to start your business so you could get caught in the weeds of doing all the things that having a business takes. You need to be the pro at what you do, and outsource the rest to someone who likes doing it, who's better at it, and who already knows how it's done.
